A Comparision of Anxiety Scores Between Before and After Operation of Patients in Hospital


Abstract
To find out the differences of the degree of anxiety perception and the factors influenced on them between before and after operation of patients in hospital, the author studied 305 patients operated in Chungnam University Hospital from March 1, 1994 to March 30, 1994. Anxiety score was calculated by self-rating anxiety scale(SAS).
The results revealed that female had higher scores than male in both pre-operative and post-operative SAS(P<0.05). The lower educational level group, the higher pre-operative and post-operative SAS score was showed in female(P<0.01).
In male, pre-operative SAS score was higher than post-operative SAS score in the group of their income over 150(10,000won/month)(P<0.05) and having care giver(P<0.01), but in female, pre-operative SAS score was higher than post-operative SAS score in the group of their income below 49(10,000won/month)(P<0.05), spouse were responsible for their treatment fee(P<0.01), and nursing person were spouse(P<0.01). In female, in the group of smoking(P<0.05), 20.0-24.9 in BMI(P<0.01), the pre-operative SAS score was significantly higher than post-operative SAS score.
